Watercolors vs. Gouache: Which Paint is Right for You?

Lately, I’ve been working on a small handmade journal, experimenting with both watercolors and gouache. Each medium has its own strengths, so I thought I’d share some of the perks and drawbacks of both. If you love painting, you’ve probably come across these two, and while they share similarities, their unique qualities can make a big difference in your creative process. Let’s dive into the pros and cons to help you decide which one suits your style best!

Watercolor

Pros:

  • Transparent & Layerable – Watercolors create beautiful, light washes and ethereal effects.
  • Fluid & Spontaneous – The paint flows naturally, making it great for loose, expressive work.
  • Lightweight & Portable – Perfect for travel and on-the-go painting.
  • Mixing Potential – Can achieve a wide range of colors with just a few pigments.

Cons:

  • Less Control – The unpredictability of water can be challenging to manage.
  • Lighter Colors Only – Once a dark color is down, it’s hard to lighten it.
  • Paper Dependent – Requires high-quality, absorbent paper for best results.

Gouache

Pros:

  • Opaque & Vibrant – Offers rich, bold colors with great coverage.
  • More Control – Doesn’t flow as much as watercolor, making details easier to refine.
  • Reworkable – Can be reactivated with water after drying, unlike acrylic.
  • Matte Finish – Gives a velvety, professional look, perfect for illustrations.

Cons:

  • Less Flow – Doesn’t have the same natural blending effects as watercolor.
  • Can Crack When Thick – If applied too heavily, it may crack when dry.
  • Not as Portable – Tends to be heavier and requires a palette for mixing.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you love soft, translucent layers and effortless blending, watercolor might be your best bet. If you prefer bold colors and a more forgiving medium, gouache is a great choice. Why not experiment with both and see what suits your style?

Which one do you prefer—watercolor or gouache? Let me know in the comments!

New Colorful Abstract Paintings from the Studio

Lately, I’ve been diving into playful designs and new exciting colors, and I just finished two new abstract paintings that I’m excited to share! Each piece is a little world of movement and energy, inspired by my love of color and spontaneous mark-making.

One of them boasts deep, rich browns that immediately made me think of dark chocolate (because, let’s be honest, chocolate is always on my mind! 🍫). The other takes a softer approach, with soothing blues and gentle pinks that bring a sense of calm and tranquility. Together, they form a beautifully balanced duo—one bold and indulgent, the other serene and dreamy!

I can’t wait to get these up in my Etsy Shop, which will hopefully soon🤞. Until then, I’d love to know—what colors are inspiring you lately?

Wishing you a creative and colorful weekend and thanks for stopping by! ✨

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

Do you ever struggle to get a good night’s sleep? I know I do. With busy schedules, endless screen time, and everyday stress, unwinding at night isn’t always easy. But small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference. Here are 10 simple habits to help you sleep better and wake up refreshed.

  1. Stick to a Schedule – Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
  2. Limit Screen Time – Turn off screens at least an hour before bed to reduce blue light exposure.
  3. Create a Relaxing Routine – Wind down with calming activities like reading or meditation.
  4. Watch Your Caffeine Intake – Avoid caffeine in the afternoon to prevent restless nights.
  5. Keep Your Room Cool & Dark – A comfortable environment helps signal your body it’s time to sleep.
  6. Exercise Regularly – Daily movement can improve sleep quality, but avoid intense workouts before bed.
  7. Avoid Heavy Meals Late – Eating too close to bedtime can disrupt digestion and rest.
  8. Manage Stress – Journaling or deep breathing can help clear your mind before sleep.
  9. Limit Naps – Keep daytime naps short (20-30 minutes) to avoid messing up your nighttime sleep.
  10. Invest in Comfort – A good mattress, pillows, and breathable bedding can make all the difference.

Better sleep doesn’t have to be complicated—small, consistent habits can lead to big improvements. Try incorporating a few of these tips into your routine and see what works best for you. Wishing you restful nights and refreshed mornings! Thanks for stopping by, and happy sleeping! 😴✨

The Magic of Layering: Creating Sunset Lake Scenes

I love experimenting in my abstract paintings, allowing each piece to evolve organically with textures, layers, and unexpected materials. Recently, I incorporated a unique twist into one of my works—a piece of cloth seamlessly blended into the paint. I didn’t have a set vision when I started, but as I layered colors and textures, something magical emerged.

Somehow, it transformed into a scene that reminds me of a sunset by the lake—a warm glow reflecting off the water, the sky shifting through soft gradients of color, and a sense of peaceful movement. That’s one of the things I adore about abstract art: the way it unfolds in unexpected ways, sometimes revealing emotions, memories, or entire landscapes you didn’t consciously set out to create.

This piece also reminded me why I love experimenting with different materials—whether it’s textiles, textured pastes, or metallic finishes, they add unexpected depth and intrigue. Pushing the boundaries of my work keeps the creative process exciting and full of discovery. I encourage anyone creating art to embrace playfulness, let go of expectations, and see where the materials take you.

But art is deeply personal, and the beauty of abstraction is that each viewer brings their own perspective. What do you see in this piece? A distant horizon? Gentle waves? A completely different story? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

✨ Wishing you a weekend filled with creativity, inspiration, and a touch of magic! ✨💫

The Lasting Influence of Leonardo da Vinci on Art and Science

Photo by Engin Deniz Kopan on Pexels.com

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was more than just a painter—he was an architect, scientist, engineer, and visionary thinker whose curiosity knew no bounds. Best known for masterpieces like Mona Lisa (pictured below left) and The Last Supper (pictured below right), da Vinci’s art captures human emotion with remarkable realism, thanks to his mastery of light, shadow, and perspective.

But Leonardo’s genius extended far beyond the canvas. He filled notebooks with studies of anatomy, flight, botany, and mechanics, designing inventions centuries ahead of his time, including flying machines and early concepts of robots. His keen observations and relentless curiosity made him a true Renaissance polymath, influencing both art and science in profound ways.

Leonardo da Vinci’s boundless curiosity and mastery across disciplines continue to inspire artists, scientists, and inventors, proving that creativity and knowledge go hand in hand. His ability to blend science with art, observation with imagination, and precision with wonder reminds us that the pursuit of learning is limitless—and that imagination has the power to shape the future. Whether sketching a flying machine or capturing the human soul in a portrait, da Vinci’s legacy teaches us that artistic expression and discovery go hand in hand. In his own words, ‘Learning never exhausts the mind’—a timeless reminder to keep exploring, questioning, and creating.
