Creative Evolution of Abstract Landscapes

Last week, I shared a peek at this watercolor while it was still a work in progress. I had the basic composition in place, but I knew it needed more depth, color, and a little something extra.

Now it’s finished—and for the moment, I’m calling it Shimmering Tides. Although, knowing me, the title may still change!

Before… and After!

Looking back at the “Before” version I shared last week, it’s fun to see how much this little abstract landscape changed! A few more layers of color added depth and richness, while the gold and silver highlights gave it that final touch of shimmer and whimsy.

I love how abstract art allows me to suggest a landscape without having to paint every detail literally. The flowing shapes, layered colors, and shifting tones create a sense of place while leaving plenty of room for the imagination.

For this piece, I built up the blues and greens and balanced them with warm sandy tones. Each layer added a little more depth and movement, helping the composition feel more complete.

But my favorite part came at the end: the shimmer!

I added touches of gold and silver throughout the painting, which catch the light and give the piece an unexpected sparkle. They’re subtle in some areas and more noticeable in others, adding just a touch of whimsy without taking away from the watercolor.

It’s always interesting to see how a painting evolves. Sometimes I start with one idea and the artwork takes me somewhere completely different. That’s part of what makes creating abstract art so much fun!

Looking at the Before and After, I’m really happy with how this little abstract landscape evolved. It has the peaceful feeling I was hoping for, but with a little more color, depth, and sparkle than where it began.

The Magic of Letting Go in Art Creation

Sometimes a painting has plans of its own.

When I began this watercolor, I had a completely different vision in mind. I imagined one direction, selected my colors, and started painting with a clear destination. But somewhere along the way, everything changed. Instead of resisting it, I decided to listen.

One of the things I love most about watercolor is that it reminds me not everything can—or should—be controlled. The pigments flow, blend, and settle in ways that are impossible to predict. Sometimes the best thing I can do is step back and let the painting become what it wants to be.

Years ago, I would have tried to force this piece back into my original idea. I would have worried I’d ruined it. Experience has taught me something different: those uncertain early layers are often where the magic begins.

By staying patient and trusting the process, this painting slowly revealed a peaceful landscape with soft turquoise reflections and warm golden earth—something I never would have created if I had insisted on controlling every step.

Life often works the same way. Our carefully made plans don’t always unfold as expected, but those unexpected turns can lead us somewhere even more meaningful than we imagined.

This painting is a reminder to keep the faith, stay patient, and remain open to where the journey leads. Whether you’re creating art, pursuing a dream, or navigating everyday life, there is beauty in allowing room for the unexpected.

Moonlit Currents: A Calming Coastal Watercolor

There’s something so peaceful about the feeling of standing near the water at night — the glow of moonlight reflecting across the shoreline, the gentle movement of the tides, and the calm that seems to settle over everything. That quiet feeling became the inspiration behind my newest original watercolor painting, “Moonlit Currents.”

This 5×7 abstract watercolor features deep midnight blues, glowing turquoise tones, warm sandy golds, and flowing details that create a dreamy coastal atmosphere. I wanted this piece to feel both calming and full of movement, like waves quietly drifting beneath a star-filled sky.

One of my favorite parts of creating watercolor paintings is watching the colors naturally blend and move across the paper. The soft transitions in this piece helped create that peaceful, atmospheric feeling I was hoping for. “Moonlit Currents” also includes an approximately .5 inch white border, making it easy to frame and display.

I think this painting would work beautifully in a cozy reading nook, bedroom, office, or any space needing a little softness and calm coastal energy.
