There’s something incredibly satisfying about finishing a new journal page. Not because every page has to be perfect or because I always know where a painting is going when I begin. Sometimes, it’s simply the joy of seeing all those little pieces finally come together.

This is the latest page I finished in my art journal, and it certainly doesn’t shy away from color!

I started building the page with bold sections of yellow, pink, blue, green, and purple. From there, I began adding patterns, doodles, and decorative details. One of the things I particularly enjoy about art journaling is how a simple painted area can become something completely different once I start drawing over it.

The black-and-white circle borders became an important part of this page. They help separate the different areas while also adding the intricate detail that I love so much. I also added gold lines that almost look like stitching, giving some of the shapes an extra decorative touch.

And then there’s the leafy branch sweeping across the yellow area, which is one of my favorite details on this page. I love how it changes the feeling of the composition, bringing a softer, more organic element to all the bold shapes and patterns. I added subtle shading with a 2B pencil and blending stump to give the leaves a little more depth and dimension. Against the geometric shapes, curves, dots, and decorative details, the leafy branch adds a sense of movement and life. It almost feels as though it’s growing right across the page, weaving its way through all the color.

The little green section in the lower corner was another opportunity to have fun with pattern. I filled it with pink swirls, dots, flowers, and tiny decorative marks. There really is no shortage of details to discover here!

That’s one of my favorite things about working in an art journal. There are no rules saying I have to stop at one idea. I can paint, doodle, layer patterns, add metallic details, and simply see where the page takes me. It’s a wonderful way to let go of expectations and enjoy the process.

This page turned out to be a celebration of color, pattern, and movement. The bright colors seem to dance across the page, while the detailed doodling invites you to slow down and look a little closer. It’s busy, playful, and maybe a little whimsical—and I think that’s part of its charm.

I never quite know what a journal page will become when I start. Sometimes the biggest surprise is discovering that the finished piece has a personality all its own.
