Do’s and Don’ts of Creating a Gallery Wall

Featured

A gallery wall is one of the easiest ways to add personality to your home. Whether you’re displaying original artwork, family photos, or treasured keepsakes, a thoughtfully arranged gallery wall can turn a blank space into a beautiful focal point. The key is creating a collection that feels balanced, inviting, and uniquely yours.

Do Plan Your Layout First

Before hanging anything, take a little time to experiment with the arrangement. Lay your frames on the floor or tape paper templates to the wall to see how everything works together.

Start with your largest or favorite piece as the anchor of the display, then build the rest of the collection around it. Keeping the spacing between pieces fairly consistent—about 2 to 3 inches—helps create a polished, cohesive look.

Don’t Hang Artwork Too High

One of the most common decorating mistakes is placing artwork too high on the wall. As a general guideline, the center of your gallery should be close to eye level. If you’re hanging it above a sofa, console table, or bed, leave about 6 to 8 inches of space between the furniture and the bottom of the artwork.

It’s also helpful to keep the gallery wall proportional to the furniture below it. A display that’s roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture usually feels balanced and comfortable.

Do Mix Sizes and Add Interest

A gallery wall doesn’t have to be perfectly matched. Mixing large and small pieces, vertical and horizontal artwork, and different frame styles creates visual interest and gives the display a collected feel.

You can also add dimension by including mirrors, small shelves, decorative objects, or other meaningful items. Even with a variety of pieces, choosing a simple color palette helps tie everything together.

Don’t Overcrowd the Wall

Every piece deserves a little room to shine. Leaving enough space between artwork keeps the wall from feeling cluttered and allows each piece to be appreciated.

Don’t worry about making everything perfectly symmetrical, either. Slightly asymmetrical arrangements often feel more natural and tell a more personal story.

Most importantly, choose artwork that speaks to you. A gallery wall filled with meaningful pieces will always feel more special than one built around generic décor.

Do Consider Lighting and Wall Color

Lighting can completely change the way artwork is experienced. A well-placed lamp, picture light, or track lighting can bring attention to your favorite pieces and add warmth to the room.

Wall color also plays an important role. Light-colored walls create a bright, airy backdrop, while darker walls can make artwork stand out with dramatic contrast. Choose the look that best reflects the mood you want to create.

Don’t Be Afraid to Refresh It

A gallery wall isn’t something that has to stay the same forever. As your style evolves or your collection grows, rearrange pieces, add new artwork, or rotate favorites into the display.

Your gallery wall should grow with you, telling the story of your experiences, creativity, and the things that bring you joy.

A thoughtfully curated gallery wall isn’t about following strict design rules—it’s about creating a space that feels welcoming, meaningful, and uniquely yours.

Thank you for reading today’s Thoughtful Thursday. I hope these simple tips inspire you to create a gallery wall you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Wishing you a colorful, creative day!

Finding Joy in the Process

Featured

One of the things I love most about watercolor is that it always has a surprise waiting for me.

That’s exactly how these four little watercolor abstracts came to life.

They started as practice pieces, but somewhere along the way they became much more than that. One brushstroke led to another, colors blended in unexpected ways, and before I knew it, each panel had developed its own personality. I never know exactly where a painting will take me, and honestly, that’s part of the fun.

I especially enjoyed adding all the little details—the dotted lines, tiny marks, pops of bright color, and touches of shimmering gold. Those finishing touches always seem to bring everything to life, and they’re often my favorite part of the process.

Looking at all four together, I can already see ideas I’d love to explore in a larger painting someday. It’s funny how a simple practice session can spark inspiration for something bigger. Sometimes all it takes is giving yourself permission to experiment.

I think that’s one of the things I love most about creating art. There aren’t any rules saying every painting has to be perfect or even finished with a specific goal in mind. Sometimes it’s enough to simply enjoy the process, try something new, and let your creativity surprise you.

Do you have a hobby where you lose track of time because you’re having so much fun? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope these colorful little paintings bring a smile to your face and remind you that wonderful things often begin with simply being willing to try.

Discovering Beauty in Abstract Art

Featured

Sometimes the most beautiful discoveries happen when we slow down and really look.

This collection of four colorful abstract studies invites your eyes to wander from one panel to the next, uncovering playful patterns, shimmering details, and unexpected combinations of color along the way. Each little painting has its own personality, yet together they tell a joyful story about creativity, curiosity, and finding beauty in the smallest moments.

As I worked on these pieces, I found myself enjoying how each section developed its own unique character. A sweep of vibrant yellow here, a burst of turquoise there, tiny dotted details, flowing lines, and touches of shimmering gold all came together in ways that made me smile.

The more I looked at them as a group, the more I began imagining them as something beyond a practice piece. I’ve been contemplating creating a larger work inspired by this idea—one designed specifically to be framed as a collection. There’s something special about individual pieces that stand beautifully on their own while also becoming part of a larger story when displayed together.

One of the things I love most about abstract art is that it invites each of us to see something different. There isn’t a right or wrong interpretation. What catches your eye may be completely different from what catches mine, and that’s part of the magic. Every time you return to a piece, you may discover a new detail you hadn’t noticed before.

Creativity has a wonderful way of reminding us to slow down, stay curious, and appreciate the little things. Sometimes all it takes is a closer look to uncover unexpected beauty.

Thank you so much for stopping by today! I hope this colorful collection inspires you to pause, look a little closer, and find joy in the little details that brighten your own day.

Exploring Creative Playfulness with Sweet Sadie

Featured

Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time creating abstracts, so I felt like taking a little break and trying something different. Karen Campbell’s Wonky Woofers was the perfect choice. As I flipped through the book, Sweet Sadie immediately caught my eye. With her floppy ears, curly features, and sleepy little eyes, she was just too adorable to pass up.

It was such a fun change of pace to create something whimsical and playful instead of my usual abstracts, and Sweet Sadie certainly brought plenty of smiles to my studio.

Why Sweet Sadie Stole My Heart

One of my favorite things about Sweet Sadie is her peaceful expression. She looks completely content stretched out on the ground with her eyes gently closed, as if she’s having the best nap ever.

What made this project even more special is that my own furry baby, who recently turned two years old, is also named Sadie. In fact, this little Wonky Woofer looks a bit like her! Those floppy ears and sweet expression reminded me so much of my own girl, which made this project feel extra special.

The Joy of Trying Something Different

One of the things I love about creativity is that it doesn’t always have to be serious. Sometimes it’s about trying something different, having fun, and creating something that simply makes you smile.

As much as I love painting colorful abstracts, it was refreshing to switch gears and create something playful and lighthearted for a change.

Final Thoughts

Sweet Sadie may be taking a nap, but she certainly made a lasting impression on me. Between her floppy ears, gentle expression, and cozy pose, she’s a pup that’s hard to forget.

I’d love to hear about your furry baby! Share their name (and maybe a photo if you have one) in the comments below. 🐶💕

Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope Sweet Sadie brought a smile to your face and inspired you to make a little time for creativity. Have a wonderful and creative day!

Exploring Abstract Art: Ocean Blues vs. Playful Pinks

Featured

There’s something so freeing about creating just to explore—and these two practice abstract sets were exactly that. No pressure, just color and curiosity leading the way.

Both are made up of four mini abstracts using the same mix of watercolors, acrylics, pens, pencils, and bits of collage—yet they each took on a completely different mood.

Cool, Calm Ocean Blues

The first set leans into soft blues and greens, inspired by the gentle rhythm of the ocean. The colors flow naturally, with subtle texture and small pops of green, yellow and light that feel peaceful and soothing.

Warm, Playful Pinks

The second set is full of warmth and energy, with vibrant pinks, touches of orange, and hints of gold. Layered marks, playful movement, and a bit of shimmer give these pieces a lively, expressive feel.

Same Process, Different Personalities

I love how the same materials can lead to such different results. One calm and flowing… the other bright and full of energy.

It’s a beautiful reminder that creativity doesn’t have to be perfect—just showing up and playing can lead to something unexpected and joyful.

Which one speaks to you more—the calming blues or the playful pinks?

Thank you so much for stopping by. Wishing you a happy, colorful, and wonderful day ✨

Exploring Creative Freedom in Art Journaling

Featured

Art journaling is such a fun way to play and get in some practice at the same time. It’s the perfect space to try out new ideas, techniques, tools, and colors without any pressure—just pure creativity.

When I make these abstract pieces, I love how the shapes and colors take on a life of their own. Simply using more or less water can create the coolest organic effects. Whether I’m brushing wet paint onto dry paper or working wet-on-wet, the results are always different, and honestly, always a little surprising!

This piece was created in my Strathmore Watercolor Journal using only three shades of blue. I added some line work and fun details with Posca pens and gold metallic markers. It turned into an interesting little design that really invites you to stop and look a bit closer.

Whatever your passion is, keep practicing and nurturing it. Doing what you love brings so much joy—and it’s amazing to see how your skills grow along the way.

Thanks so much for stopping by, and I hope you have a wonderful day!

New Art Releases: Moments of Renewal and Echoes of Joy

These past two weeks have been a whirlwind, but I survived! 🎉

Long story short—my computer crashed, and I was nearly in tears thinking I’d lost all of my work and photos. 😢 Thankfully, everything was recovered, and I now have a brand-new computer—yay! The downside? It came with all-new software, including a different version of Windows and my photo-editing program, so there’s definitely a learning curve. But I’ll get there😅

While my computer was down, I still managed to get some work done from my phone (which was not easy on that tiny screen!). I did, however, manage to list two new pieces in my Etsy shop:

🎨 Moments of Renewal – A 5×5-inch abstract painting that glows with depth and movement. Layers of luminous color and expressive brushwork create a radiant composition that feels alive—evoking both serenity and inspiration.

🎨 Echoes of Joy – A vibrant 4×12-inch modern abstract that bursts with rhythm and harmony. Energetic strokes and shifting layers of color capture a sense of celebration and motion, like joyful echoes reverberating through light and space.

✨ Both of these one-of-a-kind abstracts make a bold statement as wall art or as a shelf accent in your home, office, or creative space. Their vivid hues and dynamic energy invite reflection, spark conversation, and add a touch of contemporary elegance wherever they’re displayed.

Building Layers in My Art Journal – Part 2!

There’s nothing quite like watching a page come to life, one layer at a time. In this week’s YouTube video, I continue working in my new handmade art journal—this time adding vibrant layers of paint to the textured background I created in Part 1!

I used some of my favorite colors to build depth and interest: DecoArt Baby Pink, Golden Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Golden Teal (Blue Lagoon), Lukas Titanium White, Liquitex Cadmium Orange, and a bit of Liquitex Glazing Medium to tie everything together. I also pulled out my trusty brushes, a silicone tool, and even a Catalyst for some expressive mark-making!

🎨 Haven’t seen Part 1 yet? I created the base using Tim Holtz collage sheets and vintage book pages. I’m also planning to incorporate some dreamy digital images from CherylFrancisArt on Etsy—stay tuned for those in upcoming pages 💕

Creating Depth in Abstract Art with Alcohol Inks

I finished a new abstract in my Arteza Journal, and I’m so happy with how it turned out!

I continued experimenting with alcohol inks, and I love the way they flowed and blended in this piece. I built up multiple layers, with the alcohol inks as the final touch, and they interacted beautifully with the acrylics underneath—much better than my last attempt! One of my favorite things about this technique is how the layers peek through in different areas, adding depth and intrigue.

For a little extra magic, I added a small butterfly in the top left corner, created from a piece of painted paper I had saved in my stash. And of course, I couldn’t resist a touch of glitter and gold—they catch the light so beautifully!

I’m still in the middle of organizing my studio, and let’s just say… I have more supplies than I realized! 😂 What are your weekend plans?

Transforming Mistakes into Art with Glitter

This week, I finished a new abstract in my Arteza Journal, and let’s just say—it didn’t turn out quite as expected. 🎨

I experimented with alcohol inks, loving their fluid movement—until they ran into the orange paint and turned… brown. 🤨 Not the contrast I was hoping for! For a moment, I wasn’t sure what to do, but I’ve learned that sometimes, all a painting needs is one more layer.

Enter glitter paint. ✨ And just like that, the shimmer softened the brown, catching the light in a way that made everything feel more intentional. A little sparkle really does work wonders!

Now, with that piece finished, I’m shifting gears for Mission Organization—because my studio has officially reached creative chaos mode. Time for a reset!

What’s on your weekend agenda? Creating, organizing, or just relaxing? Drop me a line in the comments! 😊
