Create Your Reality: Insights from Florence Scovel Shinn

Featured

Have you ever read a book written nearly 100 years ago and thought, Wow… this feels surprisingly relevant today? That was my experience reading The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn.

Originally published in 1925, this little book explores how our thoughts, words, beliefs, and actions can influence the way we experience life. Shinn describes life almost like a game, one in which we each have more influence than we may realize. And I loved it.

One idea that stayed with me is Shinn’s belief that we each have within us the power to create our reality through our thoughts, our words, and our actions. That doesn’t mean we can control everything that happens. Life brings unexpected turns, disappointments, and challenges. But we can choose how we respond, what we tell ourselves, and what we do next.

Be Mindful of the Words You Speak

Shinn places a lot of importance on the words we use, especially when talking about ourselves and our lives. One quote from the book really made me stop and think:

“The subconscious mind has no sense of humor and people often joke themselves into unhappy experiences.”
— Florence Scovel Shinn

Think about how easily we say things like “I’ll never be able to do that,” “I’m just not good at this,” or “Nothing ever works out for me.” Shinn’s point made me wonder how often the words we repeat become messages we begin to believe. Instead of “I can’t,” perhaps we could say, “I’ll see what I can do.” Instead of “I’m not good enough,” perhaps, “I’m still learning.” Our words don’t have to be relentlessly positive, but they can be kinder and more hopeful.

Your Path Doesn’t Have to Look Like Anyone Else’s

Another idea that resonated with me is what Shinn calls “perfect self-expression”—finding and expressing the unique gifts within you. I love that idea, especially as an artist.

It’s easy to look at someone else’s work, success, or life and wonder if we’re doing enough. But maybe we’re not supposed to follow someone else’s path. Your creativity doesn’t have to look like mine, your dreams don’t have to look like someone else’s, and your definition of success doesn’t have to fit anyone else’s. There’s something wonderfully freeing about discovering your own way.

The Power of Perspective

Our thoughts can’t prevent difficult things from happening, but they can influence our confidence, choices, and actions. If we constantly expect the worst, we may stop ourselves before we begin. Approaching life with hope, gratitude, and openness may help us see possibilities we would otherwise miss.

I also loved Shinn’s encouragement to release envy and comparison. Instead of spending our energy wishing we had someone else’s life, we can use that energy to create something meaningful with our own.

For me, that’s the heart of the book: We may not be able to choose everything that happens in our lives, but we can be intentional about the thoughts we nurture, the words we speak, and the actions we take.

The Game of Life and How to Play It is a quick read, but it gave me plenty to think about. Not every idea will resonate with everyone, but I think it’s worth approaching with an open mind and taking away the ideas that speak to you.

Nearly a century later, Shinn’s message about intention, gratitude, and believing in our possibilities still feels meaningful. Sometimes an old book has a surprisingly fresh message—and sometimes that message arrives at just the right time.

Wishing you a thoughtful and wonderful Thursday. 💖

Do’s and Don’ts of Creating a Gallery Wall

Featured

A gallery wall is one of the easiest ways to add personality to your home. Whether you’re displaying original artwork, family photos, or treasured keepsakes, a thoughtfully arranged gallery wall can turn a blank space into a beautiful focal point. The key is creating a collection that feels balanced, inviting, and uniquely yours.

Do Plan Your Layout First

Before hanging anything, take a little time to experiment with the arrangement. Lay your frames on the floor or tape paper templates to the wall to see how everything works together.

Start with your largest or favorite piece as the anchor of the display, then build the rest of the collection around it. Keeping the spacing between pieces fairly consistent—about 2 to 3 inches—helps create a polished, cohesive look.

Don’t Hang Artwork Too High

One of the most common decorating mistakes is placing artwork too high on the wall. As a general guideline, the center of your gallery should be close to eye level. If you’re hanging it above a sofa, console table, or bed, leave about 6 to 8 inches of space between the furniture and the bottom of the artwork.

It’s also helpful to keep the gallery wall proportional to the furniture below it. A display that’s roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture usually feels balanced and comfortable.

Do Mix Sizes and Add Interest

A gallery wall doesn’t have to be perfectly matched. Mixing large and small pieces, vertical and horizontal artwork, and different frame styles creates visual interest and gives the display a collected feel.

You can also add dimension by including mirrors, small shelves, decorative objects, or other meaningful items. Even with a variety of pieces, choosing a simple color palette helps tie everything together.

Don’t Overcrowd the Wall

Every piece deserves a little room to shine. Leaving enough space between artwork keeps the wall from feeling cluttered and allows each piece to be appreciated.

Don’t worry about making everything perfectly symmetrical, either. Slightly asymmetrical arrangements often feel more natural and tell a more personal story.

Most importantly, choose artwork that speaks to you. A gallery wall filled with meaningful pieces will always feel more special than one built around generic décor.

Do Consider Lighting and Wall Color

Lighting can completely change the way artwork is experienced. A well-placed lamp, picture light, or track lighting can bring attention to your favorite pieces and add warmth to the room.

Wall color also plays an important role. Light-colored walls create a bright, airy backdrop, while darker walls can make artwork stand out with dramatic contrast. Choose the look that best reflects the mood you want to create.

Don’t Be Afraid to Refresh It

A gallery wall isn’t something that has to stay the same forever. As your style evolves or your collection grows, rearrange pieces, add new artwork, or rotate favorites into the display.

Your gallery wall should grow with you, telling the story of your experiences, creativity, and the things that bring you joy.

A thoughtfully curated gallery wall isn’t about following strict design rules—it’s about creating a space that feels welcoming, meaningful, and uniquely yours.

Thank you for reading today’s Thoughtful Thursday. I hope these simple tips inspire you to create a gallery wall you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Wishing you a colorful, creative day!

Small Acts of Kindness: Lessons from a Mockingbird

Featured

Sometimes the smallest moments in nature leave the biggest impression.

A few weeks ago, Rosie, Sadie, and I were in our backyard when a mockingbird became quite upset as we got close to one of the hedges. She chirped loudly, making it very clear we weren’t welcome there. I immediately backed away, figuring she must have a nest or babies nearby.

About a week later, it happened again in another part of the yard. Once again, I respected her wishes and quickly moved away.

Then something unexpected happened.

The following week, I watched that same mockingbird fly in carrying a strand of coconut seeds still attached to the twig. The bundle looked so heavy I had to laugh—it seemed like it weighed more than she did! She dropped it right on the sidewalk where Rosie, Sadie, and I walk every day.

A few days later, she did it again… and then one more time. I couldn’t help but wonder, Was she bringing me gifts?

After a little research, I learned that while mockingbirds don’t normally do this, there have been instances where birds leave small gifts for people who regularly feed and care for them. Since I refill the bird feeder and fresh water every day, maybe this sweet little bird recognized me as someone who helped.

Whether that’s what she intended or not, I’ll never know. But it touched my heart and reminded me that even the smallest acts of kindness can create unexpected connections between two very different worlds.

Have a beautiful day, and may you find joy in life’s little surprises.

Discovering the Coastal Charm of Naples Soap Company

Featured

There’s something special about walking into a store filled with calming scents, beautifully handcrafted products, and a relaxing coastal atmosphere. That’s exactly the feeling many people experience when visiting Naples Soap Company — a Florida-based skincare brand known for its natural products and spa-like shopping experience.

I’ve personally loved using their soaps, and one of my favorite things about them is how luxurious and refreshing they feel while still being gentle on the skin. The scents instantly make everyday routines feel a little more relaxing and special.

Founded in 2009 by nurse-turned-entrepreneur Deanna Wallin, the company was inspired by her personal journey with eczema and psoriasis. After experimenting with natural ingredients to help soothe sensitive skin, she created products that quickly gained attention for being gentle, nourishing, and thoughtfully made.

What began as a small shop in Tin City in Naples has now grown into multiple locations across Florida, bringing a little bit of coastal-inspired self-care to both locals and visitors alike.

One of the things that makes Naples Soap Company stand out is its wide variety of products designed for everyday pampering and wellness. Their collections include:

  • Handmade soaps
  • Body butters and sugar scrubs
  • Shampoo and conditioner bars
  • Bath bombs and muscle balms
  • Facial care products like serums and moisturizers
  • Essential oils and soothing bath soaks

Many of their products are vegan, cruelty-free, and created without harsh ingredients like parabens and phthalates, making them especially appealing for those with sensitive skin.

The scents are also part of the experience. Fresh citrus, coconut, ocean-inspired fragrances, and other tropical blends capture that relaxing Florida feeling and instantly bring a little spa-like comfort into your day.

Another fun part of visiting their stores is the hands-on experience. Customers are encouraged to smell, sample, and explore products in person, which makes shopping feel more personal and enjoyable.

Over the years, the company has continued expanding throughout Florida, including locations in places like Destin, Venice, Plantation, and Santa Rosa Beach. Whether you’re shopping for a thoughtful gift or simply treating yourself to a little relaxation, it’s easy to see why the brand has developed such a loyal following.

If you enjoy natural skincare, calming scents, and products that bring a little coastal comfort into everyday life, Naples Soap Company is definitely worth exploring.

Redirecting Negativity: The Power of Positive Thoughts

Featured

There’s a saying that we become what we focus on, and the other day I was reminded just how true that can be. I was scrolling through social media when I came across a post highlighting some of the positive changes happening around the world. It was encouraging to see. Then I read the comments.

Instead of people celebrating the good, I found comment after comment of anger, criticism, and hostility. It caught me off guard, although I probably shouldn’t have been surprised. Negativity seems to spread so easily these days.

For a moment, I felt myself wanting to respond. I wanted to defend the positive message. But then I stopped and asked myself, Is it really worth giving away my peace? The answer was no.

I realized that arguing would only cost me my time and precious energy—energy that could be spent creating something beautiful, encouraging someone, or simply enjoying the day.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But I also believe our words matter. They have the power to lift people up or bring them down.

One of my favorite sayings has always been:

“If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

None of us are immune to negative thoughts. We all experience frustration and disappointment. The important thing is recognizing those moments and gently redirecting ourselves before negativity takes root.

Our attitudes create a ripple effect. Kindness encourages kindness, while negativity often spreads just as quickly. Every interaction leaves an impression, whether we realize it or not.

One of my favorite quotes from Gandhi says:

“I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.”

I love that reminder because we can’t control what others say or do, but we can choose what we allow to live in our minds.

Life isn’t perfect, and it isn’t always fair. But each day we have a choice. We can add a little more light to the world or a little more darkness.

I hope we all choose kindness. You never know how much your words might brighten someone’s day.

Thank you so much for stopping by. Wishing you a wonderful day!

Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday!

Featured

This year, the United States of America celebrates an incredible milestone—250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As Independence Day approaches, I can’t help but think back to one of my favorite childhood memories.

When I was in elementary school, our school celebrated America’s Bicentennial with a special parade to honor the American spirit. It seemed like just about every student participated, and I was excited to be one of them.

I dressed as Betsy Ross, proudly carrying a flag that I pretended to be stitching as I walked through the parade. I already had a long dress that was perfect for the occasion, but what made my costume truly special was the old-fashioned bonnet my mom lovingly sewed for me from some spare fabric she had around the house.

My mother was an incredibly talented seamstress. There wasn’t much she couldn’t make, and her creativity made my Betsy Ross costume feel complete.

To my delight, I won for my class and received a Bicentennial commemorative mug as my prize. I remember how proud I was to bring it home. I used that mug so much over the years that it eventually wore out, but the memory of earning it—and that special day—has stayed with me ever since.

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, I’m reminded that history isn’t just found in textbooks. It’s found in family stories, treasured keepsakes, old photographs, handmade gifts, and memories that are passed from one generation to the next.

This historic milestone reminds me how grateful I am for the freedoms we often take for granted—the freedom to create, to express ourselves, to pursue our dreams, and to share our gifts with others. As an artist, those freedoms mean more to me than words can fully express.

What is one Fourth of July or childhood memory that still brings a smile to your face? I’d love to hear your story in the comments.

Thank you so much for stopping by today. Wishing you a wonderful and safe Fourth of July filled with joy, gratitude, laughter, and meaningful moments with family and friends. May your celebration be filled with happy memories that you’ll treasure for years to come.

The Art of Storytelling: Why Spielberg Inspires Generations

Featured

Steven Spielberg has been making us believe in the impossible for more than fifty years.

Last week, I finally had the chance to see Disclosure Day, and I loved it. As the credits rolled, I realized I wasn’t just thinking about the movie—I was thinking about Spielberg himself.

What makes Steven Spielberg one of the greatest storytellers ever?

Over the past five decades, Steven Spielberg has given us unforgettable films like E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, and Lincoln. While each tells a very different story, they all have one thing in common.

They remind us what it feels like to wonder.

I still remember seeing Jaws as a kid. It was so convincing that I refused to go into the ocean for the rest of the summer! That’s the kind of impact great storytelling can have. It pulls us into another world and makes us feel like we’re part of the adventure—or in the case of Jaws, part of the danger.

The best storytellers don’t simply entertain us—they invite us into another world. They make us care about people we’ve never met, places we’ve never been, and possibilities we’ve never imagined. That’s a gift Spielberg has shared with audiences for generations.

Watching Disclosure Day reminded me that great storytelling isn’t about spectacular special effects. It’s about creating an emotional connection and leaving us with questions long after the credits roll.

As an artist, that idea resonates with me.

When I begin a painting, I’m not just adding color to paper. I hope to create something that sparks an emotion, a memory, or a moment of curiosity. Sometimes a painting doesn’t need to explain itself—it simply needs to make someone pause and wonder.

Whether it’s through a camera, a paintbrush, a novel, or a piece of music, creativity has the power to inspire us, challenge us, and remind us to keep imagining what’s possible.

Perhaps that’s the true mark of a great storyteller… not someone who has all the answers, but someone who inspires us to keep asking questions.

What’s your favorite Steven Spielberg film, and why has it stayed with you over the years? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Thank you for joining me for another Thoughtful Thursday.

Until next time, keep creating, keep wondering, and never lose your sense of curiosity.

Unlock Mental Clarity Through Journaling

Featured

Some days our minds feel completely full. Thoughts pile up, emotions get pushed aside, and stress quietly builds in the background without us even realizing it. Journaling can be a surprisingly simple way to slow those thoughts down and create space to breathe mentally and emotionally.

One of the biggest benefits of journaling is mental clarity. Writing things down often helps organize scattered thoughts and makes overwhelming situations feel more manageable. Instead of replaying everything over and over in your head, you’re giving those thoughts somewhere to go.

Journaling can also help with emotional health by creating a safe outlet for feelings. Whether you’re feeling anxious, frustrated, grateful, excited, or emotionally drained, putting emotions into words can feel incredibly grounding. Sometimes we understand ourselves better after seeing our thoughts written on paper.

The best part is that journaling doesn’t have to be perfect or time consuming. Some people write full pages while others jot down quick thoughts, gratitude lists, prayers, creative ideas, or even simple daily highlights. There’s no right or wrong way to do it.

Over time, journaling can also become a meaningful way to track personal growth. Looking back at old entries often reminds us how much we’ve overcome, learned, and grown through different seasons of life.

If starting feels intimidating, try keeping it simple:

  • Write down three thoughts from your day
  • Make a short gratitude list
  • Reflect on something that made you smile
  • Write freely for five minutes without overthinking

Sometimes the smallest habits end up making the biggest difference.

Do you enjoy journaling or want to start? I’d love to hear what helps you clear your mind and recharge emotionally.

Thank you so much for stopping by, wishing you a peaceful and inspiring day ahead. ✨

Transform Any Corner into Your Peaceful Retreat

Featured

Life can feel loud sometimes. Between endless notifications, busy schedules, and the constant pull to keep going, it’s easy to forget how important it is to simply slow down and breathe.

That’s why creating a small sanctuary space at home can feel so meaningful. It doesn’t have to be large, expensive, or perfectly styled. What matters most is that it feels calming to you — a place where you can pause, reflect, recharge, and reconnect with yourself.

Start With a Quiet Corner

A sanctuary space can begin with something as simple as a cozy chair near a window, a corner of your bedroom, or even a small spot at your kitchen table. Look for a space that naturally feels peaceful, whether it’s filled with natural light, soft textures, or a quiet atmosphere. Even the tiniest area can become special when it’s created with intention.

Add Things That Bring You Comfort

Think about what helps you feel calm and grounded.

Maybe it’s:

  • A favorite candle with a comforting scent
  • A soft blanket or cozy pillow
  • A journal for thoughts and reflections
  • Fresh flowers or greenery
  • Meaningful artwork or photographs
  • Gentle music or calming sounds
  • A stack of inspiring books

Your sanctuary should feel personal — not like something copied from a magazine. The goal is to create a space that instantly helps your shoulders relax the moment you enter it.

Let Creativity Be Part of the Space

Creative activities can be incredibly healing and grounding. Painting, journaling, sketching, knitting, reading, or even quietly arranging flowers can become peaceful rituals that help slow racing thoughts. Sometimes creativity isn’t about making something perfect. It’s simply about giving yourself permission to be present.

Reduce Visual Clutter

One of the simplest ways to create a more peaceful atmosphere is by removing a few distractions. Clearing away clutter, excess cords, piles of paper, or anything that creates visual stress can instantly change how a space feels. It doesn’t need to look minimal or empty — just intentional, with a few meaningful items that bring a sense of calm instead of clutter.

Create Small Daily Rituals

What truly transforms a corner into a sanctuary is the feeling you create there consistently.

You might:

  • Light a candle in the morning
  • Spend five quiet minutes journaling
  • Sip tea without scrolling your phone
  • Read a devotional or inspiring quote
  • Sit quietly and reflect before bed

Tiny moments of peace add up over time.

Give Yourself Permission to Pause

Sometimes we wait for life to slow down before allowing ourselves peace and reflection. But even a small sanctuary space can remind you to pause, breathe a little deeper, think a little clearer, and reconnect with what brings you joy. ✨

Do you have a favorite peaceful corner or daily ritual that helps you recharge? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Thank you so much for stopping by for this Thoughtful Thursday post. Wishing you a beautiful, peaceful, and inspiring day ahead.

Mindful Strategies to Combat Comparison

Featured

Have you ever been scrolling online and suddenly felt a shift in your mood… even though nothing actually happened?

It starts so quietly. You’re just looking, taking things in, and then something changes. Someone’s work catches your eye. Their life looks effortless. Everything seems polished, successful, figured out.

And without even realizing it, comparison slips in.

I’ve felt that too.

It’s not always loud or obvious. Sometimes it’s just a thought like, “I should be doing more,” or “Why doesn’t mine look like that?” But those small thoughts can build quickly if we let them.

What makes it tricky is that social media shows us such a curated version of life. We’re seeing the highlights—the best moments, the best lighting, the finished pieces—not the in-between, the struggles, or the slower days.

But when you’re in that scroll, it’s easy to forget.

Suddenly it can feel like:

  • You’re falling behind
  • You’re not doing enough
  • What you’re creating isn’t quite measuring up

And that’s where that heavy feeling starts to settle in.

When I notice this happening, I try not to judge myself for it. Instead, I pause and gently shift my focus. Sometimes that means stepping away for a bit, or reminding myself why I started creating in the first place. I’ve also been more mindful about what I take in—limiting my time and choosing things that actually support a better mindset and overall well-being.

Other times, it’s something simple like:

  • Putting the phone down and creating instead of consuming
  • Focusing on one small thing I’ve done well
  • Remembering that growth doesn’t always happen on display

Because the truth is, your path isn’t supposed to look like anyone else’s.

Your timing is different.
Your voice is different.
Your journey is unfolding in its own way.

And that’s not something to compare—it’s something to appreciate.

So if you’ve been feeling that quiet weight of comparison lately, just know you’re not alone. And you’re definitely not behind. You’re just in your own process.

Have you ever caught yourself in that comparison spiral? I’d love to hear how you handle it—feel free to share in the comments 💬
