Create Your Reality: Insights from Florence Scovel Shinn

Featured

Have you ever read a book written nearly 100 years ago and thought, Wow… this feels surprisingly relevant today? That was my experience reading The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn.

Originally published in 1925, this little book explores how our thoughts, words, beliefs, and actions can influence the way we experience life. Shinn describes life almost like a game, one in which we each have more influence than we may realize. And I loved it.

One idea that stayed with me is Shinn’s belief that we each have within us the power to create our reality through our thoughts, our words, and our actions. That doesn’t mean we can control everything that happens. Life brings unexpected turns, disappointments, and challenges. But we can choose how we respond, what we tell ourselves, and what we do next.

Be Mindful of the Words You Speak

Shinn places a lot of importance on the words we use, especially when talking about ourselves and our lives. One quote from the book really made me stop and think:

“The subconscious mind has no sense of humor and people often joke themselves into unhappy experiences.”
— Florence Scovel Shinn

Think about how easily we say things like “I’ll never be able to do that,” “I’m just not good at this,” or “Nothing ever works out for me.” Shinn’s point made me wonder how often the words we repeat become messages we begin to believe. Instead of “I can’t,” perhaps we could say, “I’ll see what I can do.” Instead of “I’m not good enough,” perhaps, “I’m still learning.” Our words don’t have to be relentlessly positive, but they can be kinder and more hopeful.

Your Path Doesn’t Have to Look Like Anyone Else’s

Another idea that resonated with me is what Shinn calls “perfect self-expression”—finding and expressing the unique gifts within you. I love that idea, especially as an artist.

It’s easy to look at someone else’s work, success, or life and wonder if we’re doing enough. But maybe we’re not supposed to follow someone else’s path. Your creativity doesn’t have to look like mine, your dreams don’t have to look like someone else’s, and your definition of success doesn’t have to fit anyone else’s. There’s something wonderfully freeing about discovering your own way.

The Power of Perspective

Our thoughts can’t prevent difficult things from happening, but they can influence our confidence, choices, and actions. If we constantly expect the worst, we may stop ourselves before we begin. Approaching life with hope, gratitude, and openness may help us see possibilities we would otherwise miss.

I also loved Shinn’s encouragement to release envy and comparison. Instead of spending our energy wishing we had someone else’s life, we can use that energy to create something meaningful with our own.

For me, that’s the heart of the book: We may not be able to choose everything that happens in our lives, but we can be intentional about the thoughts we nurture, the words we speak, and the actions we take.

The Game of Life and How to Play It is a quick read, but it gave me plenty to think about. Not every idea will resonate with everyone, but I think it’s worth approaching with an open mind and taking away the ideas that speak to you.

Nearly a century later, Shinn’s message about intention, gratitude, and believing in our possibilities still feels meaningful. Sometimes an old book has a surprisingly fresh message—and sometimes that message arrives at just the right time.

Transform Self-Doubt into Self-Belief

Featured

Have you ever stopped to think about the stories you tell yourself each day?

Some of them encourage us to keep going. Others quietly hold us back. The surprising part is that many of those limiting stories didn’t even begin with us. They often started years ago through experiences, comments from others, or beliefs we accepted without question.

For much of my life, I believed there were certain things I simply couldn’t do. As a child, I struggled with respiratory illness, so running never felt like it was an option. Hearing “you can’t” often enough eventually became “I can’t.”

It’s amazing how easily those words can become part of our identity.

Years ago, I began exploring books about the connection between the mind and body, along with developing a regular meditation practice. At first, meditation felt unfamiliar, but over time it became something I genuinely looked forward to—a chance to quiet the mental chatter and reset before facing the day.

What surprised me most wasn’t that my body became stronger. It was that my thoughts began to change first.

Instead of focusing on what felt difficult, I started paying attention to what was possible. Little by little, the negative inner dialogue became quieter. The voice that once said, “This is too hard,” was replaced with, “Keep going—you’ve got this.”

Those small shifts added up.

Whether I was exercising, painting, learning something new, or working toward a personal goal, I realized that my mindset often determined how far I was willing to go before I even began.

That doesn’t mean positive thinking magically removes every obstacle. Life still brings challenges, setbacks, and days when motivation is hard to find. But the way we respond to those moments can make all the difference.

When we choose to challenge old beliefs instead of accepting them as permanent truths, we create room for growth. Sometimes the biggest breakthrough isn’t changing our circumstances—it’s changing the conversation happening inside our own minds.

I think that’s one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves: permission to believe we’re capable of more than yesterday.

So today, I have a question for you.

Is there a story you’ve been telling yourself that it’s time to rewrite?

Maybe it’s about your health, your creativity, your career, or a dream you’ve put on hold. Whatever it is, consider taking one small step toward replacing “I can’t” with “What if I can?”

You may surprise yourself.

Thank you so much for stopping by and spending a few moments with me today. I hope this encourages you to believe in your own potential and reminds you that growth often begins with a single thought.

Wishing you a wonderful day!

Redirecting Negativity: The Power of Positive Thoughts

Featured

There’s a saying that we become what we focus on, and the other day I was reminded just how true that can be. I was scrolling through social media when I came across a post highlighting some of the positive changes happening around the world. It was encouraging to see. Then I read the comments.

Instead of people celebrating the good, I found comment after comment of anger, criticism, and hostility. It caught me off guard, although I probably shouldn’t have been surprised. Negativity seems to spread so easily these days.

For a moment, I felt myself wanting to respond. I wanted to defend the positive message. But then I stopped and asked myself, Is it really worth giving away my peace? The answer was no.

I realized that arguing would only cost me my time and precious energy—energy that could be spent creating something beautiful, encouraging someone, or simply enjoying the day.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But I also believe our words matter. They have the power to lift people up or bring them down.

One of my favorite sayings has always been:

“If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

None of us are immune to negative thoughts. We all experience frustration and disappointment. The important thing is recognizing those moments and gently redirecting ourselves before negativity takes root.

Our attitudes create a ripple effect. Kindness encourages kindness, while negativity often spreads just as quickly. Every interaction leaves an impression, whether we realize it or not.

One of my favorite quotes from Gandhi says:

“I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.”

I love that reminder because we can’t control what others say or do, but we can choose what we allow to live in our minds.

Life isn’t perfect, and it isn’t always fair. But each day we have a choice. We can add a little more light to the world or a little more darkness.

I hope we all choose kindness. You never know how much your words might brighten someone’s day.

Thank you so much for stopping by. Wishing you a wonderful day!

Nurturing Growth: Finding Clarity This Season

Featured

There’s something about this time of year that feels like a quiet invitation.

An invitation to begin again.
To try something new.
To nurture something that’s been patiently waiting beneath the surface.

Growth doesn’t always arrive in big, dramatic ways. Sometimes, it’s subtle. It’s choosing to show up for yourself a little more consistently. It’s letting go of what no longer fits. It’s making space—mentally, emotionally, or even creatively—for something fresh to take root.

So today, I invite you to pause and ask yourself:

What am I ready to grow this season?

Maybe it’s a creative practice you’ve been putting off.
Maybe it’s confidence, or peace, or a sense of direction.
Maybe it’s something as simple (and powerful) as joy.

Growth doesn’t need to be perfect. It doesn’t need to be rushed. Like anything nurtured with care, it unfolds in its own time.

And just like in art, not every layer is meant to be seen—but every layer matters.

So wherever you are right now, trust that small steps count. Tiny shifts add up. And even the quietest beginnings can lead to something beautiful.

Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope this little moment of reflection brings you clarity, inspiration, and a gentle sense of possibility. Wishing you a wonderful and creative day ahead.
