Small Acts of Kindness: Lessons from a Mockingbird

Featured

Sometimes the smallest moments in nature leave the biggest impression.

A few weeks ago, Rosie, Sadie, and I were in our backyard when a mockingbird became quite upset as we got close to one of the hedges. She chirped loudly, making it very clear we weren’t welcome there. I immediately backed away, figuring she must have a nest or babies nearby.

About a week later, it happened again in another part of the yard. Once again, I respected her wishes and quickly moved away.

Then something unexpected happened.

The following week, I watched that same mockingbird fly in carrying a strand of coconut seeds still attached to the twig. The bundle looked so heavy I had to laugh—it seemed like it weighed more than she did! She dropped it right on the sidewalk where Rosie, Sadie, and I walk every day.

A few days later, she did it again… and then one more time. I couldn’t help but wonder, Was she bringing me gifts?

After a little research, I learned that while mockingbirds don’t normally do this, there have been instances where birds leave small gifts for people who regularly feed and care for them. Since I refill the bird feeder and fresh water every day, maybe this sweet little bird recognized me as someone who helped.

Whether that’s what she intended or not, I’ll never know. But it touched my heart and reminded me that even the smallest acts of kindness can create unexpected connections between two very different worlds.

Have a beautiful day, and may you find joy in life’s little surprises.

Redirecting Negativity: The Power of Positive Thoughts

Featured

There’s a saying that we become what we focus on, and the other day I was reminded just how true that can be. I was scrolling through social media when I came across a post highlighting some of the positive changes happening around the world. It was encouraging to see. Then I read the comments.

Instead of people celebrating the good, I found comment after comment of anger, criticism, and hostility. It caught me off guard, although I probably shouldn’t have been surprised. Negativity seems to spread so easily these days.

For a moment, I felt myself wanting to respond. I wanted to defend the positive message. But then I stopped and asked myself, Is it really worth giving away my peace? The answer was no.

I realized that arguing would only cost me my time and precious energy—energy that could be spent creating something beautiful, encouraging someone, or simply enjoying the day.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But I also believe our words matter. They have the power to lift people up or bring them down.

One of my favorite sayings has always been:

“If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

None of us are immune to negative thoughts. We all experience frustration and disappointment. The important thing is recognizing those moments and gently redirecting ourselves before negativity takes root.

Our attitudes create a ripple effect. Kindness encourages kindness, while negativity often spreads just as quickly. Every interaction leaves an impression, whether we realize it or not.

One of my favorite quotes from Gandhi says:

“I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.”

I love that reminder because we can’t control what others say or do, but we can choose what we allow to live in our minds.

Life isn’t perfect, and it isn’t always fair. But each day we have a choice. We can add a little more light to the world or a little more darkness.

I hope we all choose kindness. You never know how much your words might brighten someone’s day.

Thank you so much for stopping by. Wishing you a wonderful day!

Thoughtful Thursday – Show Dad Your Love

I can’t believe that Father’s Day will already be here this Sunday, June 18th. This is a special day to celebrate those great dads who are here with us today and also to honor and remember those who are no longer with us.

Dads have a unique style all of their own in how they handle life and teach us what they know. I learned so much from my dad and he was the one who inspired me to create art. My love for photography, roses and birds all came from him. So how will you show your love to that great man?

Here are a few ideas for Father’s Day:

  • Make a handmade card with a personal photo.
  • Make a photo collage of memorable moments.
  • Have an outdoor celebration in the park, beach or your own backyard.
  • Take dad out on a sporting adventure of his choice.
  • Go camping for a night.
  • Cook his favorite dinner.
  • Have a backyard movie night.
  • Build something fun together.
  • Spend an evening star gazing.
  • Spend a nice day together talking about fun memories.
  • Take him on a fun road trip.
  • Go to a sports game together.
  • Tour a vineyard or brewery.

Wishing all Dad’s a very Happy Father’s Day!

Thoughtful Thursday – Mirror Neurons

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

What are mirror neurons? Mirror neurons are the part of the brain that cause us to mimic or reflect back what we are seeing in another person. For example when you see some one hurt themselves, you may winch and feel their pain. Or when some one yawns, you’ll have to yawn yourself even though you’re not tired. The same also holds true for when some one is in a bad or good mood. Their mood may rub off on us. This is because of the mirror neurons in our brains.

When I first started my morning walks I’d smile at strangers and most often I didn’t get much of a response, much less a positive one. But I didn’t let this stop me because I was determined to share my happiness.

As I continued my walks day after day, I’d smile bigger and longer. If that didn’t work I’d follow that with a twinkling wave and a cheerful “Good Morning!” I completely understand that not everyone wants to be happy and that’s ok.

But smiles are contagious and are universally understood. If you smile at some one long enough, you’ll most likely get a smile back due to the mirror neurons. Whether you’re in a good mood or not, the fact that you’re smiling instantly raises your energy and you can’t help but feel uplifted.

After a couple of weeks something magical started happening. These strangers who were not the happiest little campers suddenly became friendlier. I began to get big smiles, twinkling waves and morning shout outs of “Good Morning!” So much so that some would go out of their way to greet me. It made me feel even happier that I was able to share my positive energy with others. I may not have changed the world, but I changed my corner of it, just a bit.

Imagine if everyone tried to “Share the Happy” with those around them. Life isn’t always perfectly happy but when we put more of that positive energy out there, it will surely come back to us ten fold. So what are you waiting for, get out and share a great big smile with some one today 😊

Thoughtful Thursday – Give Mom a Gift that Touches her Heart 💖

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, this Sunday, May 9th. So why not give mom a gift that touches the heart. I have many fond memories of Mother’s Day celebrations but when my son baked me a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting, all vegan from scratch with a beautiful design in colored sprinkles, that really touched my heart 💖 He put so much love into that cake for me I’ll cherish that memory forever. Not to mention, the cake was so delicious we polished it off in only 2 days!!

Another touching memory was when my daughter spent a very rainy Mother’s Day with me watching our favorite movies with popcorn and candy. We had lunch in between and even played a few board games which is something I’ve loved doing since I was a kid. We had such fun together as we laughed all day. She created a wonderful loving memory that I will hold in my heart till the end of time 💖

So what are you going to do for you mom on Mother’s Day that will touch her heart? Here’s a few ideas to get you inspired:

  • Cook her favorite meal and serve it on a lavishly decorated table.
  • Bake her favorite sweet treat and serve it up bistro style.
  • Take her on a picnic and spend a quiet afternoon talking.
  • Take an art class with her, whether online or in person and create something together.
  • Make a scrapbook filled with all of your favorite memories and photos of her.
  • Make her a handmade card or mini book with special photos or memorabilia.
  • If you’re computer savvy, create a video slide show of your favorites times spent together.
  • Make her a spa basket with handmade treatments (plenty of recipes can be found online).

Get creative, put a little extra thought into it and give her a gift from your heart 💖
