Thoughtful Thursday – Cecilia Beaux Artistry

Sita and Sarita (1893 – 1894)

Cecilia Beaux, an extraordinary portrait artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is celebrated for her exquisite ability to capture the essence of her subjects with grace and sophistication. Born in Philadelphia in 1855, Beaux’s remarkable talent and dedication to her craft earned her a prominent place in the art world, rivaling her male contemporaries like John Singer Sargent.

Beaux’s portraits are renowned for their meticulous detail, luminous quality, and psychological depth. She had a unique gift for portraying not just the physical appearance of her subjects, but also their inner lives and personalities. One of her most famous works, “Sita and Sarita” (shown above), beautifully illustrates her skill in rendering the delicate interplay of light and shadow, bringing her subjects to life with astonishing realism.

What sets Beaux apart is her ability to infuse her portraits with a sense of intimacy and connection. Her paintings often depict family members, friends, and notable figures of her time, each rendered with a sensitivity that reveals their individuality and character. Her work is a testament to her belief that a portrait should be a true representation of the person, capturing their spirit and essence.

Cecilia Beaux’s legacy extends beyond her stunning artworks. She broke barriers in a male-dominated field, paving the way for future female artists. Her achievements are a testament to her exceptional skill, perseverance, and passion for art. Her portraits continue to inspire and captivate, showcasing the enduring power of art to touch the human soul.

Thanks for joining me in celebrating the incredible artistry of Cecilia Beaux. I hope her story and work inspire you as much as they inspire me!

Sea Girl Portrait Art Journaling

I can’t believe how long it took me to complete this art journal portrait! I began with the sketch in December, and after several layers of watercolors, she’s finally finished. 👏👏 The sketch itself was time-consuming, as I wanted to get it just right. Then, I meticulously added layer upon layer of watercolors, with a few enhancements using colored pencils—though not too much. It was truly a labor of love, and I poured so much time and effort into each detail. This video shows how it all came together 😊

I hope this inspires you in some way. Have a great weekend! ⠀

Butterfly Art Journaling

This artwork is for the Scrappy8Challenge on Instagram, and this month’s theme is “Don’t label me!” Coming up with this design was quite the journey! I played around with watercolors, pen, stencils, some cool stamps, collage and a bit of glitter. For this theme I added a few empowering phrases that speak volumes:

“STOP comparing”
“labels are limiting”
be YOU-nique!”

I created this design in my 4.5×5″ handmade watercolor journal that was gifted to me by my sister from ArtsiRosi Etsy Shop. I’ve been using this journal for the challenge and it has quickly become one of my favorite journals!

I hope this piece sparks your creativity and inspires you to break out your art supplies for some weekend fun! Wishing you a safe and Happy Memorial Day!!

Inchie Challenge 2024 (Days 9-12)

Whoo hooo!! I’ve completed all 12 days of Amy Maricle’s Inchie Challenge at Mindful Art Studio, and it’s been an absolute delight every step of the way. Creating these tiny works of art has been a source of pure joy for me. Now, I’m excitedly planning to assemble them into a brand-new journal, giving each inchie its well-deserved place of honor.

I decided to add a touch of glitter onto the Day 11 tile (Expansive) for some extra sparkle. But as I attempted to move it aside to dry, I accidentally stuck my fingers right into the wet glitter! Well, I suppose that’s just how the cookie crumbles! 😂😂

Here are the prompts that inspired this final set of inchies:

  • Day 9 – Shell
  • Day 10 – Buds
  • Day 11 – Expansive
  • Day 12 – Landscape

Thanks for joining me on this artistic adventure! Have a wonderful weekend!!

Inchie Challenge 2024 (Days 4 – 8)

I found myself busy working on multiple projects in the studio so I’ve been a little slow at finishing these inchies for the Challenge that was hosted by Amy Maricle at Mindful Art Studio.

The tile above was one of my favorites especially for the prompt involving circles on Day 6. It emerged beautifully on a watercolor tile I had tucked away, patiently awaiting a surge of creative inspiration. The way the colors blended together on this piece was truly captivating. Now, with new prompts in hand, I’m eager to dive into the next phase of creativity.

  • Day 4 – Mountain
  • Day 5 – Bristles
  • Day 6 – Circles
  • Day 7 – Stone
  • Day 8 – Inky

I mulled over several ideas for Day 8, ‘Inky,’ before deciding. I opted to dust off my calligraphy pen and sepia ink to craft an intriguing weave tile, adorned with a heart motif (as depicted below).”

I hope these inchies inspire you in some way, thanks for stopping by!!

Puppy Art Journaling

I’m playing catch-up with the Scrappy8Challenge on Instagram. Only one prompt a month, and I still managed to fall behind! 😂 For March, the prompt was “Collaged Animal.”

So I’m sharing one of my all-time favorite photos of my pup, Chanel. That bashful look gets me every time! She’s an absolute sweetheart, and her resilience is truly inspiring. Despite losing her sight at 3 years old, she wakes up every morning with boundless joy and still plays fetch! She’s got a lot of determination and a great attitude💖

This was created in my 4.5×5″ handmade watercolor journal, using watercolor paints and pens. I added a felt heart and a sprinkle of rhinestone hearts, along with the collaged image of my little girl.

Hope Chanel’s story brings a smile to your face today. Wishing you a fantastic day ahead!
